How can you survive a big earthquake? I mean, a BIIIIG one. A catastrophic size.
Answer: By minimizing damages. But how…?
Here is one of the most effective and inexpensive ways of minimizing damages in case of such an earthquake.
Plain and simple. Fix furniture onto the wall.
Here are some examples. You can buy these pressure sticks that hold the cabinet at ordinary home centers for 3,000 yen or so. The same thing for the “L”-shaped metal piece with which the furniture is nailed to the wall.
Why are these procedures so important?
Because a big earthquake does not necessarily amount to a total collapse of your apartment building or house. In fact, a lot of concrete-made buildings usually survive pretty strong earthquakes.
Despite that fact, people die or get injured because furniture like closets, TV, and dish cabinets fall on them. A whole TV unit can fly from one end of the room to the other in a maginitude-7 earthquake. Imagine yourself standing in an unprotected room like that….
Gotta do it before you regret.
